Dr Ian Fraser

DVA, Adult General Practice

Professional Background

Dr Fraser trained at Saint Bartholomew Hospital (St Barts) in London and medicine runs in his veins, with his father and grandfather both being doctors.  Upon completing his training in 1972 he was presented with an opportunity to come to Australia and work as a doctor in Townsville.  He and his new wife, Elizabeth, headed to Townsville in the summer of 1973 where he took up the position of Consultant in charge of Casualty and Outpatients.  During this time he also worked as the sexual health doctor on Thursday Island.  Two children and four years later Dr Fraser commenced private practice in a local shopping complex before building a medical practice of his own.  Dr Fraser worked at Bamford Medical from 1977 until relocating with Elizabeth to Brisbane to be near their children and grandchildren earlier this year.

Dr Fraser has worked extensively with the Veterans community of the garrison city of Townsville.  He has been an early adapter to the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD, during a time when it was poorly understood or recognised.  His expertise in the field of PTSD and other defence related injuries and illnesses have seen him as the “go to” Medical Officer for ex defence men and women and he recognises that such illnesses impact not only the individual but also families and the wider community.

Dr Fraser also has a keen interest in Parkinson’s disease and diabetes and he is well versed in all areas of medicine and enjoys the diversity that general practice brings.  Dr Fraser enjoys walks along the Brisbane River and is never short of a joke.
