Rod Martin on Ticker News: Why Transition from Military Service to Civilian Life Matters

supporting veterans through the transition to civilian life

Last week on Ticker News, GO2 Health Co-Founder Rod Martin joined presenter Ahron Young to discuss one of the most important issues facing Australia’s veteran community: the transition from military service to civilian life.

what transition really looks like for veterans

During the interview, Rod shared insights shaped by years of working alongside veterans and their families. He highlighted that:

  • The transition journey is incredibly complex, not just physically but culturally
  • Many veterans hold unique strengths and skills, yet many of these aren’t easily recognised or translated into civilian workplaces
  • The first 18 months after leaving service are often the most challenging, with increased risks of PTSD, depression and anxiety
  • Access to care can vary widely, depending on where veterans live, particularly in rural and remote areas

These lived experiences reinforce the need for a system that understands the whole person, not only their injury or condition, but their identity, purpose, relationships and sense of belonging.

a shift in the national conversation

Rod also reflected on how Australia’s understanding of veteran support is evolving. Increasingly, the conversation is moving beyond compensation alone and towards rehabilitation and repatriation, supporting veterans not only with their injuries but with reconnecting to family, work and community.

For Rod, Dr Kieran McCarthy and the GO2 Health team, improving the transition process is about understanding people: their experiences, their identity, the major adjustment that comes after service, and helping them achieve what matters most in their lives.
